Aquila is very proud to announce its sponsorship of the victorious 2022 Falkland Islands Games team. The Aquila-sponsored team won the overall competition which concluded on Friday 21 October.

Aquila has been a supporter of the Games since they began in 2021. The Games originated during the Covid-19 pandemic when restrictions prevented islander travel to the Inter-Island Games. We were pleased to be able to sponsor the Games again this year.

Not only were Team Aquila to win, but two of our Aquila staff took part. Falklands Site Support Engineer, Garry Tyrell, who took part in the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, lent his not-insignificant skill to the team in the lawn bowls competition, helping to coach the team to victory.

And Falklands Islands Service Delivery Manager Patrick Fitz-Gerald got on his bike – literally – to complete the 6km bike ride. Patrick provided accompaniment and encouragement to a young member of the team after a technical issue and harsh weather conditions threatened her race.

Team Aquila won by a convincing margin – coming first with 36 points – a full 13 points ahead of their nearest rivals.

Aquila Falklands Business Support Administrator, Louise Fitz-Gerald, summed up the performance:

“The victory was in no small way due to the great gamesmanship and unity of the team and the support of Aquila personnel on the side lines egging them on.”

Congratulations to the team and “Chapeau!” to all those who took part or supported the Games!
