Aquila Ships New Radio Equipment to Ascension Island

New communications equipment is on its way to Ascension Island to support UK Ministry of Defence operations in the South Atlantic.

Aquila provides air traffic management and surveillance solutions and servicing in some of the most remote parts of the world. This volcanic but beautiful mid-Atlantic island is no exception.

The new communications systems, provided by Aquila and designed and manufactured by its partner Jotron, will be used to assist UK MOD operations on the island.

Ascension is a strategic staging post, located midway across the Atlantic. It is used by Royal Air Force flights en route from the UK to the Overseas Territory of the Falkland Islands, off the coast of South America.

The communications equipment will provide significantly enhanced audio quality, with high immunity to unwanted signals. Aquila’s solution is also simple to use and comes with remote monitoring. This reduces the maintenance burden which is vital on such a remote island location.

The new equipment forms part of a full transformation of all UK MOD air station and ground-air traffic control systems being led by Aquila.

Stations across the UK, Cyprus, Gibraltar and the South Atlantic will have internationally compliant, reliable and enduring air traffic management systems and support.

Aquila engineers will provide full maintenance and service support for the MOD’s new systems over the course of the 22-year programme.
